Transmutations - Book (Polaroid Emulsion Transfers)
Transmutations - Book (Polaroid Emulsion Transfers)
In the very early 2000s, I discovered the technique of creating emulsion
transfers while reading through a photography magazine. This is a form
of image manipulation taken from a Polaroid, which is then transferred
onto fine art watercolor paper. How this is accomplished is by trimming
the white edges off of the Polaroid frame, then boiling the print to
lift and separate the top emulsion layer and placing onto a new surface.
Having never actually shot anything with a Polaroid camera, I
discovered it was possible to imprint images from slide film onto
Polaroids with a special projector. I had plenty of slides lying around,
so I purchased the device and many Polaroid film packs and got to
creating.
These emulsion transfers were made during my very early
years of shooting male nudes, and I only had images from six shoots to
work with, so I used what I had. Some of the transfers I left fairly
true to their original size and representation of the image, while
others I enlarged and spread out the emulsion to make a more surreal
final product. The end result of the process is a one-of-a kind piece of
art.
